Ian Douglas recently completed “Warbird”, his latest build, which was born out of a combined love of vintage aircraft engines and similar period motorcycles. The engine is a scratch designed/built power-plant that utilizes WWII radial aircraft cylinders and a one-off hand built crank case.
This isn’t one of those little Rotec radials used by Jesse James or JRL Cycles, these pieces are from a full size aero engine from the 1930s. The 2 cylinders, with a bore of 5.125″ and stroke of 4.625″ yield 191 cubic inches (3130cc) and mate to a crankcase designed by Ian himself. He designed the patterns, a local foundry made the casting.
Everything was built by Ian in his garden shed. He designed and built the boardtrack style hardtail frame with sufficient size to hold the engine while keeping it proportioned so someone can actually ride it. The artwork was done by a very talented local girl named Jennie Persak. She hand painted it with a brush no less! not an easy prospect when painting over a textured surface.
The colour was applied by an experienced aviation painter named George Kanavaros. He also painted a custom Indian motorcycle that I built that was a show winner.
Great looking bike with a beautiful looking engine.

VIERA, FLORIDA — Celebrity motorcycle builder Billy Lane is set to go to trial in December, more than two years after a fatal head-on crash that left one man dead.
Lane, 38, is charged with one count of DUI manslaughter in connection with the fatal Labor Day 2006 traffic accident.
Police said Lane’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he crossed a double yellow line to pass several cars near Melbourne Beach, striking Sebastian Inlet park ranger Gerald Morelock’s motorcycle head-on.
During a pretrial conference hearing today in Viera, Brevard Circuit Judge Meryl Allawas designated the trial as a “priority” for her next trial period — which lasts Dec. 1 through 12 — with the understanding that it may have to be canceled if defense attorney Greg Eisenmenger cannot move existing schedule conflicts.
A final determination will be made during a calendar call hearing set for Nov. 21.
Allawas had expected to hear three hours of testimony today on several defense motions seeking to bar trial testimony about blood evidence.
billy-lane-dodge-truck-250However, Eisenmenger - who had Lane’s blood samples re-tested earlier this year at an out-of-state lab on the theory that mishandling by police possibly led to contamination and a skewed blood-alcohol reading - canceled the motion hearing late last week.
“We decided it was probably better tactics for us to raise those issues before the jury during trial, so as to not tip our hand,” Eisenmenger told Florida Today in an interview.
Eisenmenger and Assistant State Attorney Tom Brown said they expect the trial to last up to two weeks, and that they anticipate pre-trial publicity could result in a lengthy jury selection process.

A young biker goes to the Job Centre in Northampton., and sees a card advertising for a Gynaecologist’s Assistant. Interested, he wants to learn more. “Can you give me some more details?” he asks the job centre assistant.
The assistant pulls up a job description and says, “The job entails getting ladies ready for the gynaecologist. You have to help them out of their underwear, lay them down and carefully wash their private regions, then apply shaving foam and gently shave off any hair, then rub in soothing oils so they’re ready for the gynaecologist’s examination. There’s an annual salary of £18 thousand, but you’re going to have to go to Carlisle. That’s about 250 miles from here.”
“Oh, is that where the job is?” the young biker asks.
“No mate, said the assistant - that’s where the end of the line is right now.”

First seen at the Twin Club’s Custom Bike Show at Norrtalje, Sweden, in June, Lasse Sundberg’s Indian Power Plus engined chopper improved on its joint third placing there by scooping the win at the latest round in the 2009 Official World Championship’s international affiliate event program.
The Big Twin Bikeshow & Expo (formerly ‘MotorSale’) in the Netherlands is one of Europe’s best established and well respected custom bike events, and one with the emphasis very much on running bikes.
In a field that saw anything up to seven or eight bikes in with a chance of scooping the top prize, with several former European and World Championship competitors entered, Sundberg’s twin upswepts, Redneck Engineering framed chopper powered onto the stage to the acclaim of a crowd of more than fifteen hundred who had gathered to see the awards.
The event as a whole co-hosts Zodiac International’s annual Dealer Show, with Zodiac generously sponsoring the Bigtwin Bikeshow (as they have done for years) and, along with Harrison Billet, putting up class prizes.
Our thanks go to Margot Gerritsen and the team at Bigtwin Magazine for staging yet another fantastic weekend and helping to make the World Championship’s second affiliate year in the Netherlands such a great success.
Thanks to Bigtwin Magazine, Sundberg wins a 5,000 Euro (approx US$8,500) cash contribution towards the costs of competing at AMD’s 6th annual Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building.
The Bigtwin Bikeshow & Expo drew most of Europe’s major parts and accessory manufacturers and distributors, and many American vendors, and despite some reports that dealer attendance was lower than the event sometimes sees, the organizers say that overall attendance for the three-day event was around the same as last year, at something in the region of 20,000 custom riders and enthusiasts.
