300410amd.jpgBIG Dog Motorcycles is moving forward in 2010 with the launch of a new Chopper, aptly named the Chopper. Based on the styling of its current chopper models, the K-9 and Ridgeback, the new bike will be a lower cost option from the Wichita, Kansas based manufacturer.

“We are excited to participate in this price range with an uncompromised motorcycle of this caliber,” said Sheldon Coleman, founder and CEO of Big Dog Motorcycles, at the Chopper’s launch at the Indianapolis Dealer Expo. He continued saying: “The new Big Dog Chopper is loaded with high-quality components and performance specifications, and will appeal to a wide range of riders. Our dealers are very enthusiastic about this strategy.”

The specifications for the new model include a 111ci S&S engine and a six-speed transmission, a 42-degree raked frame and new rear suspension, chrome handlebar controls, a new handlebar array, chrome forward controls, new BDM multi-function speedometer, machined aluminum wheels, and a 250 rear tire.

Following the launch of the Chopper, Coleman went on to explain: “This is a landmark achievement for our company. Thanks to the cooperation with our dedicated suppliers and the hard work of our engineering experts, we have been able to provide classic Big Dog performance and style to a broader range of consumers.

The new Chopper is agile to ride, lightning quick off the line and will come from the factory with Big Dog’s legendary bike-show paint and a wide selection of custom graphics. With acceleration from 0 - 60 in 3.9 seconds and 42mpg, this bike is amazing. It is with great pleasure that we introduce the new Big Dog Chopper at this all-new price point.”

Milwaukee Iron Up For Sale?

Source :- Chris Callen.

Their entire inventory will be auctioned off on August 27th, live and online.

After 26 years operating under the name of Milwaukee Iron, world renowned builder, Randy Simpson, is closing the doors to his Lynchburg, Virginia facility. After two years of a downward trend in motorcycling that has significantly reduced the volume of his sales with stiffer and uneven competition from the overseas’ market, Randy is ready to move on to other ventures.

On top of the actual business name and entire product line of Milwaukee Iron and components needed to manufacture them, everything in their shop, all equipment and a 35 year parts inventory, will be liquidated in an auction that is open to the general public on August 27th. Some of the shop items are everything from a spinning machine for fenders, gas and oil tanks and a manufacturing robot that mig welds and plasma cuts using Lincoln equipment to several Lincoln welders (both tig and mig) and flat steel work tables. There are a large variety of hand tools, 2 press brakes (one small and one 88 ton) that will also be included in the auction. Some of the bikes Randy has become notable for during his career like Karnevil, Voodoo Child, Nuthin’ Fancy, Southern Steel and even his original Street Survivors will be up for bid.

The parts are too extensive to list in whole but there are many flathead cases and engines, a lot of new old stock frontend stuff (FLH and FLT style) pistons and rings for J models and V’s, plenty of frames from Pans, Shovels, Evos, Sportsters and even some of the MI custom frames will be included. All of this and one special item, a 40 foot shipping container that is packed to the roof with parts that will be auctioned as one lot to the highest bidder. They’re still loading parts into this thing as we speak.

In talking with Randy about this decision he seems to be in a good place with it. As he sees it, they had a good run and now he’s excited to see what comes next. “Motorcycles have always been my passion since I was seven years old when I started riding my dads 65cc Italian Harley, chasing choppers through the streets of Fairview Heights to buying his first Harley at age 17, a 1950 EL Panhead. That’s when I started working on them, buying, selling and trading out of my mom’s basement. By the time I was 21 I had bought and sold five different bikes. When I turned 26 I came up with the name Milwaukee Iron and bought a little piece of land and built the first shop on it, August 25th of 1983, that’s actually my birthday as well. At the time we did what other companies wouldn’t do like fixing frames and welding cases. As time went on, we broke into machine and fabrication work, got a lot of press for the bikes we built.  When I got to over 300 pages of features and coverage, I stopped counting. That was also when I stopped competing in shows. Our bikes had taken over 50 first place trophies by then and we just decided to continue to develop our product line. We eventually had 13 episodes of our TV show on Discovery Channel and one on Speed Vision. I’ve met some of the best people in the world and had some incredible people work with us and I thank them all for everything they have done over the years. After all the years and all the dealings we’ve had, I still can’t think of ten that were bad. I guess it’s kinda’ sad in a way but I’m also looking forward to meeting new people, seeing old friends and waiting to see what happens next. Whatever it is, I’ll be out there at all the shows with more time to ride and socialize.”

After reaching such heights in the industry, literally hundreds of pages in Easyrider as well as other magazines all over the world, Randy has the ability to look back over an illustrious career. He is keeping his factory frame table and starting over from there and you can bet that whatever he’s into, we’ll keep an eye out for it. Randy has been a good friend to a lot of us in the industry and it is with a heavy heart that we wish him good luck.

Celebrity Motorcycle Builder Billy Lane’s Trial Starts in December

billy_lane.jpgVIERA, FLORIDA — Celebrity motorcycle builder Billy Lane is set to go to trial in December, more than two years after a fatal head-on crash that left one man dead.

Lane, 38, is charged with one count of DUI manslaughter in connection with the fatal Labor Day 2006 traffic accident.

Police said Lane’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he crossed a double yellow line to pass several cars near Melbourne Beach, striking Sebastian Inlet park ranger Gerald Morelock’s motorcycle head-on.

During a pretrial conference hearing today in Viera, Brevard Circuit Judge Meryl Allawas designated the trial as a “priority” for her next trial period — which lasts Dec. 1 through 12 — with the understanding that it may have to be canceled if defense attorney Greg Eisenmenger cannot move existing schedule conflicts.

A final determination will be made during a calendar call hearing set for Nov. 21.

Allawas had expected to hear three hours of testimony today on several defense motions seeking to bar trial testimony about blood evidence.

billy-lane-dodge-truck-250However, Eisenmenger - who had Lane’s blood samples re-tested earlier this year at an out-of-state lab on the theory that mishandling by police possibly led to contamination and a skewed blood-alcohol reading - canceled the motion hearing late last week.

“We decided it was probably better tactics for us to raise those issues before the jury during trial, so as to not tip our hand,” Eisenmenger told Florida Today in an interview.

Eisenmenger and Assistant State Attorney Tom Brown said they expect the trial to last up to two weeks, and that they anticipate pre-trial publicity could result in a lengthy jury selection process.

American IronHorse begins resurrection

180908amd.jpgAmerican IronHorse (AIH), which was acquired three months ago by Scott Meyers, is undergoing a range of changes aimed at re-establishing the brand.

The new management at the company has rehired key staff to support warranty, parts, paint, and technical departments. Changes to the production facility are also underway, streamlining the plant’s overall footprint from 224,000 sq. ft. to 90,000 sq. ft.

A new dealer program is being put into place, with key markets in the US being targeted. Talking about the dealer program, Meyers said: “In addition to our loyal IronHorse riders, our dealer network has shown terrific support and proved their dedication to the survival of the brand.”

More significantly, new models are nearing completion. A Pro Street-styled prototype was debuted in Sturgis, and a second will be shown at Biketoberfest in Daytona, October 16-19. Both prototypes utilize the S&S X-Wedge 117ci engine. Commenting on AIH’s product development, Jeff Long, Vice President of Design, said: “We are committed to the progressive design, performance and heritage that makes American IronHorse a premium brand in the market.”

The last few weeks have seen excess and obsolete inventory not purchased by Scott Meyers liquidated by the former ownership group.

The new models will join the existing bike line, which is made up of four models: the Texas Chopper, Slammer, Bandera and Judge.

Presidential hopeful McCain gets “American Chopper”

occmccain.jpgMEDIA, PA (AP) — John McCain picked up a surprise gift Tuesday, an Orange County Chopper motorcycle, courtesy of the stars of the “American Chopper” reality TV series who roared in to present it to the Republican presidential hopeful.

Father and son co-stars Paul and Paulie “Junior” Teutul, whose show about building custom bikes together is a popular Learning Channel staple, appeared at McCain’s rally in this Philadelphia suburb to honor him with a special bike they’d built to recognize Vietnam-era prisoners of war.

McCain, a former Navy pilot, spent five and a half years in a Vietnam prison camp after being shot down in 1967.

His running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, introduced the Teutuls and noted that Paul Sr., like McCain, is a Vietnam veteran.

The elder Teutul briefly addressed the crowd. “How many people out there love their country and the military?” he asked to loud cheers.

McCain clearly was pleased with the gesture.

“Sarah and I are going to get on that chopper and ride it straight to Washington!” he said.

Staffers to the Arizona senator later said the chopper would remain with the Teutuls and continue to serve as a tribute to all POWs.

Big Dog debuts new Bulldog bagger

120908amd.jpg“A landmark event in the company’s 15-year history” is what CEO Sheldon Coleman calls this year’s Big Dog Motorcycles dealer meeting. Currently being held at the firm’s home in Wichita, KS, the motorcycle manufacturer’s dealer meeting is the springboard for launching three new models.

Met with the most excitement by dealers was the all-new 2009 Bulldog bagger. Shown initially without a fairing, after many hours in wind tunnel testing, Big Dog is in the final design stages of a proprietary fairing that will include a Sirius satellite radio and iPod docking. The Bulldog will come complete with lockable hardbags, a rubber-mounted 117ci fuel injected S&S motor, Baker 6-speed transmission, floorboards, nitrogen gas Works shocks and a 5 gallon gas tank. The bike will also run on a 250mm rear tire with 21″ rubber up front.

120908amd2.jpgAlso introduced was the new 2009 Coyote. While sharing the same basic platform as the highly successful Mutt, the new Coyote will include many upgrades along with a lower MSRP.

Also shown for the first time was the first production run model of the company’s flagship bike, the Wolf. The Wolf will be driven by a 121″ S&S X-Wedge motor and comes with a full chrome package.

As part of the company’s year-long 15th Anniversary celebration, Big Dog Motorcycles is also planning to release a number of highly limited edition bikes based on current models in the line.

Indian Motorcycles Roll again…..

Taken from the company blog……

And Now For The Moment We’ve All Been Waiting For…

By InMoBlog on  7/17/2008 4:25 PM

firstbike2.jpg
An enormous milestone was reached this week at the Indian Motorcycle plant when the first production vehicle rolled off the assembly line.  The first bike to wear the Indian badge was a red and cream 2009 Chief Vintage, complete with windshield, tan leather seat and saddlebags.  The bike was hand-built by a team of 6 craftsmen.

Building an Indian Motorcycle is an intricate yet rewarding process. Each bike is assembled by a team of master craftsmen. A signed certificate of craftsmanship accompanies every bike that comes off the line.

Being part of the team that is building America’s motorcycle is the greatest feeling in the world. Being there when the first bike came off the line was awe-inspiring. The 2009 Chief is truly a work of art.

Jim Nasi introduces Bagger Series kit

260608amd.jpgJIM Nasi Customs now introduces the Nasi Bagger Series kit, which was seen in prototype form at the V-Twin Expo. The new kit is made up of replacement bags, rear fender, license plate holder/taillight, front side panels and slip-on mufflers.

260608amda.jpgThe complete kit is designed as a bolt-on application to replace the stock fittings, and is described by Jim Nasi as being: “specifically designed for easy and quick installation.”

The new hard bags are fiberglass, unlike the stock items they are deeper, narrower and longer to create a more streamlined look, and mount lower on supplied brackets. Two versions of the bag are offered either with the exhaust cut-outs or without, and locks and hidden hinges are included.

260608amdb.jpgThe cut-outs in the bags were inspired by hot rod and custom car designs, the holes are filled by the Triple Shot slip-on mufflers, which can be fitted with baffles.

In addition, the kit includes new forward side panels, which help the lines of the bike flow visually into the bags, and a new rear fender. The fender is said to be the first replacement unit manufactured in steel, and is set up to take a billet license plate holder (also included). The holder has an LED taillight and indicators and is ready wired to connect to the stock bike’s electrics.

The Nasi Bagger Series Kit, available through Jim Nasi Customs, will fit ‘97 onward H-D Touring models.
