Saxon Motorcycles introduces 4th model - The Whip

whip-building.jpgAt the Arneitz Custom Show during the European Bike Week from 5 till 13 September in Faak am See Saxon Motorcycles Europe introduces her new European model: the Whip.

The Whip is a real hard tail high neck chopper, handmade but with modern technology. A rebellious uncompromising bike especially for men with guts . The proto-type of the Whip was shown during the Hamburg Harley Days in Germany and the Custom Show Viva La Clusaz in France. “The visitors have received the Whip, during these shows, with great enthusiasm and therefore it is fantastic that we are able to launch it so quickly” says Frank Vermeulen owner of Saxon Motorcycles Europe.

whip-blue-flame.jpg  The Whip is the fourth Saxon model in Europe. All European models have the European Type Approval. “We are pleased that we can expand our selection once more with a unique model” according to Frank Vermeulen, “all models have their own character, expression and feel. Like our other models the Whip can be custom build to the wishes of the buyer”.

“Due to efficiency, volume and a weak dollar we recently have lowered our prices on all models” adds Rinke Andringa, co-owner of Saxon Motorcycles Europe. “This gives us the opportunity to let more people experience the Saxon feeling”. The Saxon Whip is from today available at our dealers in Europe. Saxon also has expanded their dealer network with a new official dealer in Spain, Moto Innovación in
Alicante. “A dealership in Spain was high on our list for a while now, so we are very happy that we can make a start here” explains Rinke Andringa.

whip-tank.jpg  Saxon stands for power and quality, comfort and self expression. It is a custom built bike handmade in the professional factory in the USA and therefore fits the driver excellently. It is a beautiful product, that retains its value.

Making the choice to own a Saxon is a true form of self-expression. A motorcycle synonymous with style and abundant with charisma, that is an experience all on its own. Each Saxon represents an unmatched level of comfort, sophistication, and reliability, complete with a 2-year factory warranty. Saxon is the number 1 USA production custom motor in Europe.

Victory show radical concept machine

160109amd.jpgVICTORY Motorcycles shocked the industry when it showed its radical design concept, the Vision 800, at the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach in 2005. However, that design concept went on to become the Victory Vision, with many of the styling cues retained.

Now for 2009 the Minnesota based manufacturer looks set to do the same thing again with the launch of it’s CORE concept. Having revolutionized the touring market, it appears that Victory is now set to do the same to the Sports Cruiser class.

When Victory’s design team, led by Industrial Design Director Greg Brew and Lead Industrial Designer Michael Song, set out to create the CORE, the idea was to build a motorcycle using the minimum of elements… engine, frame, wheels and front suspension only.

“CORE is pure motorcycle,” said Song. “We wanted to strip everything not critical and build a motorcycle that uses some of the production technologies we have incorporated into the Victory Vision. The frame and engine architecture of the Victory Vision was our inspiration – but we wanted to make a statement beyond ‘custom’ and create something completely unique.”

In order to achieve a unique frame, the design was cast in aluminum, using a sand mold. It is made up of five pieces, formed from AL 356-T6 aluminum alloy and incorporates the bike’s fuel tank, airbox, battery box and the electrical system.

Suspension is limited to the front only, but takes the form of adjustable WP 48mm upside down race forks. These are fitted with equally race-inspired four-piston radially mounted twin calipers, which operate on dual 320mm discs. Braking at the rear is by a single piston caliper and 240mm disc.

A Victory Freedom 106/6 Stage 2 power plant with closed-loop fuel injection, which was debuted in the 2009 production line, is used in the CORE, along with a six-speed transmission. Maintaining the bare minimum styling, the high level, wrapped stainless steel exhaust is muffler-free.

Away from the frame the single most striking feature of the CORE is the carved mahogany seat, which also incorporates an LED taillight.

Talking about the CORE concept Greg Brew said: “CORE represents the heart of Victory Motorcycles. We want to create a new design language, but never in a way that interrupts the function of the motorcycle. The fact is, a project like CORE is as important to the design team as winning Daytona would be to an engineering team. ‘Pushing the boundaries’ is just another cliché – CORE exists to show the world how dedicated Victory is to the art and science of motorcycle design.”

Warbird 191 Cubic Inch Continental Radial V-Twin Custom

warbird.jpgIan Douglas recently completed “Warbird”, his latest build, which was born out of a combined love of vintage aircraft engines and similar period motorcycles.  The engine is a scratch designed/built power-plant that utilizes WWII radial aircraft cylinders and a one-off hand built crank case.

This isn’t one of those little Rotec radials used by Jesse James or JRL Cycles, these pieces are from a full size aero engine from the 1930s. The 2 cylinders, with a bore of 5.125″ and stroke of 4.625″ yield 191 cubic inches (3130cc) and mate to a crankcase designed by Ian himself. He designed the patterns, a local foundry made the casting.

warbird2.jpgEverything was built by Ian in his garden shed. He designed and built the boardtrack style hardtail frame with sufficient size to hold the engine while keeping it proportioned so someone can actually ride it. The artwork was done by a very talented local girl named Jennie Persak. She hand painted it with a brush no less! not an easy prospect when painting over a textured surface.

warbird3.jpgThe colour was applied by an experienced aviation painter named George Kanavaros. He also painted a custom Indian motorcycle that I built that was a show winner.

Great looking bike with a beautiful looking engine.

S&S X-Wedge Sport Fighter XTR

edmondsonxwedge.jpgS&S Cycle is going all out to promote their new X-Wedge engine as well they should. It looks like it has a lot going for it, great power output, multiple displacements available and it meets all of the EPA emission regulations. To give bikers an idea of what it can do, they’re installing it in a lot of custom bikes and signing on custom builders to wrap something around it.

This bike goes along with our big twin sport bike theme, the Sport Fighter XTR, which is the work of Tim Edmonson of Edmondson Custom Built in Texas. The engine is a fuel injected 117 inch X-Wedge hooked up to a Jims 5 speed transmission all fitted into a custom frame. Wheels are 18 inch on both ends with a 130 Metzeler up front and a 250 out back. I like the exhaust tucked up under the tail like a lot of sport bikes instead of down on the side like most of the V-Twin customs you see. It looks like it would be a fun bike and if this doesn’t give a few builders some ideas, they’re not paying attention. Remember, the EPA rules that limit custom and kit bike builders are easy to deal with if your engine is EPA certified and the X-Wedge takes care of that.
